Exotic Music of the Belly Dancer (Dig)

Exotic Music of the Belly Dancer (Dig)
One of the most popular vintage bellydance recordings of the 1950′s on CD for the first time!

MOHAMMED EL BAKKAR will always be remembered as a favorite of lovers of Middle Eastern music both in this country and abroad. Prior to his coming to the United States, where he was a featured star in the Broadway musical hit “Fanny” for two and one-half years, he was the leading tenor of the Orient. As such he had a long list of outstanding appearances to his credit, including command performances for King Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia, the Shah of Iran, former King Farouk of Egypt and Maj. Gen. Mohammed Naguib, his successor. Bakkar also was an accomplished actor. He produced, directed and acted in no less than thirty-two motion pictures. In addition, he was heard on many radio and television programs in the triple role of singer, arranger and conductor. He filled numerous engagements in major eastern American cities, where he received enthusiastic acclaim. During leisure hours, he liked nothing better than to entertain his Syrian, Lebanese, Turkish and Persian compatriots wherever they congregated.

The Graying of the Raven: Cultural & Sociopolitical Significance of Algerian Folk Poetry

From East to West The raven has turned gray O Reader of the unknown Help us in our ordeal! With a fine touch, Aida Bamia has explored the work of Muhammad bin al-Tayyib ‘Alili (c.1894-c.1954), a hitherto virtually unknown oral poet of Algeria, bringing to her analysis new understanding of folk poetry as part of a people’s collective memory and their resistance to colonization. For ‘Alili’s audience the despair and suffering faced by poor farmers before independence is embodied by the raven, grown old and gray with ceaseless frustration and humiliation. Because of its oralâ??and all too often ephemeralâ??nature, the work of poets such as ‘Alili could escape close scrutiny by French colonial administrators who sought to eradicate nationalistic and ethnic elements. With succinct commentary, Bamia presents an outstanding historical and contextual background for ‘Alili’s repertoire, while she details the richness and variety of poetic forms that had developed in North Africa. In doing so, she shows an intimate grasp of the poet’s repertoire and technique, as well as of the colonial and postcolonial implications of Algerian folklore and poetry.
